Anafiotika

Nestled on the northeastern slope of the Acropolis hill, Anafiotika is a scenic tiny neighborhood that feels like a portal to the Aegean Sea. Its story began in the mid-19th century during the reign of King Otto, when skilled stone workers from the island of Anafi were brought to Athens to help reconstruct the city and build the Royal Palace. Homesick for their island lifestyle, these craftsmen began building their own homes in the style of their birthplace, creating a Cycladic oasis in the heart of the Greek capital. The construction of Anafiotika was a feat of architectural rebellion and necessity. Because the area was technically protected, the workers utilized an Ottoman-era custom which suggested that if a structure was completed between sunset and sunrise, it could not be legally demolished. Working by moonlight, the Anafiots erected small, white-washed dwellings with flat roofs and colorful shutters, effectively transplanting the aesthetic of the Cyclades onto the rocky slopes of Athens. Over the decades, the neighborhood faced numerous threats, including demolition orders in the 1950s for archaeological excavations. However, many of the original structures survived and were eventually designated as protected heritage sites. Today, Anafiotika remains one of the most photographed and beloved hidden gems of Athens, maintaining its quiet, residential character despite being located just steps away from the bustling tourist centers of Plaka and the Acropolis.
