Lumpini Park
Historical Significance
Established in the 1920s by King Rama VI, Lumpini Park was the first public park in Bangkok. It was originally royal property intended to be an exhibition ground for Thai crafts and flowers, but after World War I, it was repurposed to serve as a green lung for the city's growing population. The name 'Lumpini' is derived from Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha in Nepal, reflecting the spiritual and tranquil intent behind its creation. During World War II, the park underwent a dramatic transformation when it was used as a military camp by Japanese forces. Following the war, it was restored to its former glory and became a central hub for social and political gatherings. Throughout the mid-20th century, it evolved into a venue for diverse activities, from ballroom dancing and music performances to political rallies, solidifying its role as the 'Central Park' of Bangkok. Today, Lumpini Park stands as a 142-acre oasis amidst the skyscrapers of the Silom and Sathon districts. It has survived urban expansion and remains a critical habitat for local wildlife, most notably the famous water monitor lizards. The park continues to be a symbol of the city's commitment to public health and recreation, hosting thousands of joggers, Tai Chi practitioners, and tourists every single day.
