Teatro Colón
Historical Significance
Opened on May 25, 1908, the Teatro Colón is widely considered one of the top five opera houses in the world for its exceptional acoustics and architectural beauty. The current building replaced an earlier version from 1857 and took twenty years to complete due to the deaths of its first two architects, Francesco Tamburini and Vittorio Meano. The project was eventually finished by Jules Dormal, resulting in an eclectic style that blends Italian Renaissance and French Baroque elements. The theater features a massive horseshoe-shaped auditorium with seven tiers and was declared a National Historic Monument of Argentina in 1991. Between 2006 and 2010, it underwent a comprehensive restoration to modernize its technical facilities while preserving its world-renowned sound quality.
