Cairo Tower

Commissioned by President Gamal Abdel Nasser and designed by the renowned architect Naoum Shebib, the Cairo Tower was constructed between 1956 and 1961. Standing at 187 meters on Gezira Island, it was the tallest structure in Africa for a decade. Its distinctive lattice-work design was inspired by the lotus plant, an ancient Egyptian symbol representing the sun, creation, and rebirth, perfectly blending modern engineering with national heritage. It is widely believed that the US Central Intelligence Agency provided several million dollars to Nasser as a personal gift or bribe to influence his policies. Instead of keeping the money, Nasser famously diverted the entire sum toward the construction of the tower, turning a secret diplomatic maneuver into a public monument of defiance that Egyptians jokingly referred to as 'Roosevelt's Erection'.
