Lion's Head
Historical Significance
Formed over 500 million years ago, Lion's Head is a geological marvel composed of Cape Granite and Table Mountain Sandstone. Long before European arrival, the indigenous Khoikhoi people lived in the shadow of this peak, likely utilizing the high vantage point to track seasonal movements of game and changing weather patterns across the peninsula. The landmark received its current name in the 17th century from Dutch settlers, who called it 'Leeuwen Kop' because its silhouette against the sky resembled a crouching lion. Together with the adjacent Signal Hill, which was seen as the 'Leeuwen Staart' or lion's tail, the formation became a vital navigational landmark for ships entering Table Bay. Throughout the 19th century, the peak served as a crucial lookout for signalmen who would hoist flags to communicate with approaching vessels. Today, it has transitioned from a maritime sentinel to one of the world's most popular urban hiking destinations, offering a challenging but rewarding climb that provides a 360-degree view of the Mother City and the Atlantic Seaboard.
