Table Mountain

Table Mountain is one of the oldest mountains in the world, with its base rocks dating back over 500 million years. The iconic flat-topped silhouette is primarily composed of hard, erosion-resistant Ordovician sandstone, which has withstood hundreds of millions of years of geological shifts and weathering. This ancient landmark provides a vital link to the Earth's deep past, having witnessed the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana and the gradual formation of the African continent as we know it today. For the indigenous Khoisan people, the mountain was known as Hoerikwaggo, meaning 'Mountain in the Sea.' It held deep spiritual significance and served as a crucial navigational landmark for centuries. The first recorded ascent by a European occurred in 1503, when Portuguese explorer António de Saldanha climbed the mountain and named it 'Taboa do Cabo.' Since then, it has become an enduring symbol of Cape Town, representing the intersection of diverse cultures and the raw power of nature. In the modern era, Table Mountain has transitioned from a rugged frontier to a globally recognized icon of biodiversity and tourism. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway was first established in 1929, drastically changing how people interact with the summit. In 2011, it was officially inaugurated as one of the New7Wonders of Nature, a testament to its unique ecological value. Today, it forms the centerpiece of the Table Mountain National Park, protecting thousands of species of endemic fynbos vegetation and serving as a sanctuary for Cape Town's natural heritage.
