Two Oceans Aquarium
Historical Significance
Opened in November 1995, the Two Oceans Aquarium was established at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to showcase the incredible marine diversity found where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. This unique geographical positioning creates a rich biological environment, which the aquarium aims to replicate through its diverse exhibits. Since its inception, the facility has grown from a local attraction into an internationally recognized center for marine research and conservation education. Over the decades, the aquarium has undergone significant expansions, most notably the introduction of the I&J Ocean Exhibit and the extensive Predator Exhibit. These additions have allowed for larger species, such as ragged-tooth sharks and giant rays, to be housed in environments that closely mimic their natural habitats. The aquarium’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its state-of-the-art life-support systems and its focus on local species found along the Southern African coastline. Today, the Two Oceans Aquarium is a leader in marine conservation, particularly through its dedicated Turtle Conservation Centre. It serves as a vital rescue and rehabilitation hub for injured and stranded sea turtles, while simultaneously educating the public on the impacts of plastic pollution and climate change on our oceans. Its legacy is built on a foundation of fostering a deep connection between people and the sea.
