Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA)

The Zeitz MOCAA is housed in the historic Grain Silo Complex at the V&A Waterfront, a structure that dates back to 1921. For decades, it served as the tallest building in Sub-Saharan Africa and played a pivotal role in South Africa's international trade by storing and grading grain. After it was decommissioned in 2001, the industrial icon stood vacant for years until a vision emerged to transform the concrete monolith into a world-class cultural institution. The architectural transformation was led by the renowned British designer Thomas Heatherwick, who faced the immense challenge of repurposing 42 vertical concrete tubes. Rather than demolishing the structure, Heatherwick Studio carved a massive, vaulted atrium into the center of the silos, shaped like a single grain of corn scaled up to monumental proportions. This surgical intervention preserved the industrial heritage while creating a cathedral-like space for art. Since its grand opening in September 2017, the museum has become the largest of its kind in the world dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. It serves as a non-profit institution that collects, preserves, and researches the work of artists from across the continent, housing the extensive private collection of Jochen Zeitz alongside rotating temporary exhibitions that challenge and inspire global audiences.
