CopenHill

CopenHill, also known as Amager Bakke, stands as a revolutionary landmark in Copenhagen, blending industrial utility with urban recreation. Conceived by the renowned Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the project was designed to replace an aging waste-to-energy plant with a facility that would contribute positively to the city's social fabric. Since its completion in 2017, the plant has become a symbol of hedonistic sustainability, proving that green infrastructure can be fun and aesthetically pleasing rather than just functional. The architecture of CopenHill is its most striking feature, characterized by a sloping roof that doubles as a year-round artificial ski slope. The building's facade is composed of stacked aluminum bricks that create a textured, shimmering effect while allowing natural light to enter the facility. Beyond skiing, the structure hosts the world's tallest climbing wall, measuring 85 meters, and a lush hiking trail designed to mimic a natural mountain ecosystem, complete with trees and shrubs that provide a habitat for local birds and insects. As a key component of Copenhagen's ambitious goal to become the world's first carbon-neutral capital, CopenHill is one of the cleanest waste-to-energy plants globally. It processes approximately 440,000 tons of waste annually, converting it into electricity and district heating for tens of thousands of households. The plant's advanced filtration system ensures that the emissions are virtually free of toxins, making it safe for the public to enjoy outdoor activities directly on top of the industrial machinery.
