Rosenborg Castle

Rosenborg Castle was originally constructed in 1606 as a summer residence for King Christian IV, one of Denmark's most famous and ambitious monarchs. Built in the Dutch Renaissance style, which was typical of Danish architecture during this period, the castle began as a small country house but underwent several expansions over twenty-eight years to become the majestic structure seen today. It served as a primary royal residence until 1710, when the royal family moved out, preferring more modern palaces like Frederiksberg. After the royal family departed, the castle was transformed into a site for the royal collections. It was unique for its time because it was intended to house the private treasures of the Danish kings, effectively becoming a living timeline of the monarchy. In 1838, Rosenborg was opened to the public as a museum, making it one of the oldest museums of its kind in the world. Today, the castle remains remarkably well-preserved, standing as a testament to the grandeur of the Danish Golden Age. It is most famous for housing the Royal Regalia and the Danish Crown Jewels, which are still used by the current monarch for special state occasions. The interiors are arranged chronologically, allowing visitors to walk through the history of the House of Oldenburg, from the 16th to the 19th century, surrounded by original furniture, tapestries, and portraits.
