Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens opened its gates on August 15, 1843, making it the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world. The founder, Georg Carstensen, obtained a five-year charter from King Christian VIII by famously stating that 'when the people are amusing themselves, they do not think about politics.' Initially, the park featured flower gardens, cafes, and basic mechanical rides like a carousel and a primitive scenic railway, quickly becoming a beloved social hub for Copenhagen's elite and commoners alike. Throughout the 20th century, the park faced significant challenges, most notably during the Nazi occupation of Denmark in World War II. In 1944, Nazi sympathizers bombed the park in an act of 'Schalburgtage'—retaliation against the Danish resistance—destroying several iconic buildings including the Glass Hall and the original concert hall. However, the Danish spirit prevailed, and the park was reconstructed shortly after the war, preserving its whimsical atmosphere while integrating more modern attractions and performance spaces. Today, Tivoli remains a global cultural landmark that seamlessly blends historic charm with contemporary entertainment. It is famous for its Rutschebanen, a wooden roller coaster built in 1914 that still requires an onboard operator to apply the brakes. The park's commitment to aesthetics, from its lush landscaping to the thousands of colorful lights that illuminate the grounds at night, continues to influence amusement park design worldwide.
