The Real Mary King's Close

The Real Mary King's Close is a historic close located under buildings on the Royal Mile in the Old Town area of Edinburgh, Scotland. Named after Mary King, a merchant burgess who resided on the close in the 17th century, it was once a bustling center of trade and tenement living. Unlike the myth that it was walled up during a plague outbreak to let the inhabitants die, the close was actually partially demolished and buried during the 18th century to provide a level foundation for the construction of the Royal Exchange, now known as the City Chambers. This architectural decision effectively sealed the lower levels of the street, preserving them as a subterranean time capsule. For centuries, these rooms and alleys remained hidden from the world above, forgotten by most until they were reopened to the public. Today, it serves as a unique museum where visitors can walk through authentic 17th-century streets and houses that have remained largely unchanged for over 250 years.
