Oceanário de Lisboa

The Oceanário de Lisboa was the centerpiece of the 1998 Lisbon World Exposition, themed 'The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future.' Designed by renowned American architect Peter Chermayeff, the building was constructed on a pier in the Doca dos Olivais. Its striking architecture, resembling a ship anchored in the Tagus River, symbolized Portugal's historical connection to maritime exploration while anchoring the massive urban renewal project of the Parque das Nações district. At the heart of the facility lies the Global Ocean tank, a massive seven-million-liter volume of water that serves as the visual and conceptual anchor for the entire experience. This central tank is surrounded by four distinct habitats representing the North Atlantic, the Antarctic, the Temperate Pacific, and the Tropical Indian oceans. This innovative design allows visitors to perceive the interconnectivity of the world's oceans, emphasizing that there is truly only one global ocean. Since its opening, the Oceanário has transitioned from a temporary exhibition site into a world-class center for marine research and environmental education. It consistently ranks as one of the best aquariums globally and has welcomed over 28 million visitors. Beyond its role as a tourist attraction, it actively funds conservation projects worldwide, focusing on the preservation of biodiversity and the mitigation of climate change impacts on marine ecosystems.
