Hollywood Sign

Originally erected in 1923, the Hollywood Sign was never meant to be a permanent fixture of the Los Angeles skyline. It was created as a massive billboard for a real estate development called Hollywoodland, costing roughly 21,000 dollars at the time. Each letter stood 50 feet tall and was illuminated by thousands of light bulbs, serving as a beacon for potential homeowners looking for a suburban escape in the hills above the city. By the late 1940s, the sign had fallen into a state of severe disrepair, reflecting the neglect of the development it once promoted. In 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce entered into a contract with the City of Los Angeles to repair and restore the sign. As part of the agreement, the 'LAND' suffix was removed so that the sign would represent the district of Hollywood rather than a specific housing development, officially cementing its status as a symbol of the global entertainment industry. The sign faced another crisis in the 1970s when the wooden structure began to rot away entirely, leading to a public campaign for its survival. In 1978, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner hosted a gala where individual donors, including rock star Alice Cooper, 'purchased' replacement letters for 27,777 dollars each. This led to the construction of the current steel-and-concrete version of the sign, which stands 45 feet high and remains one of the most protected and photographed landmarks in the world.
