Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, commonly known as LACMA, was established as an independent institution in 1965, having previously been part of the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science, and Art. Located on the historic Miracle Mile, the museum's original campus was designed by architect William Pereira. Since its opening, it has served as the primary encyclopedic art museum in the western United States, dedicated to collecting and preserving works that represent the diverse history of Los Angeles and the world. Over the decades, LACMA has undergone significant physical and conceptual transformations. In the early 2000s, the museum launched a major expansion project that included the addition of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum and the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Exhibition Pavilion. These additions allowed the museum to showcase its massive collection of over 150,000 objects, ranging from ancient artifacts to contemporary masterpieces, making it a cornerstone of the Southern California arts scene. Currently, the museum is in the midst of its most ambitious project yet: the construction of the David Geffen Galleries. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor, this new horizontal structure will span across Wilshire Boulevard. This bold architectural statement aims to redefine the museum experience by creating a non-hierarchical layout, ensuring that LACMA remains a dynamic and inclusive cultural hub for future generations of art lovers.
