TCL Chinese Theatre

The TCL Chinese Theatre opened its doors on May 18, 1927, as the most spectacular movie palace of its time. Conceived by showman Sid Grauman, who had previously built the Million Dollar Theater and the Egyptian Theatre, it was designed to transport audiences to an exotic land. The grand opening featured the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille's 'The King of Kings,' marking the beginning of a legacy that would see it become the epicenter of Hollywood film culture. Its distinctive pagoda-style architecture and copper-topped towers remain iconic symbols of the Golden Age of Hollywood. One of the theatre's most famous features is the Forecourt of the Stars, containing nearly 200 handprints, footprints, and autographs of movie legends. Legend has it that the tradition began by accident when silent film actress Norma Talmadge stepped into wet cement during the construction phase. Grauman recognized the promotional potential of this mishap and turned it into a formal ceremony. Over the decades, everyone from Shirley Temple to the cast of Star Wars has left their mark in the concrete, creating a physical timeline of cinematic history that millions of tourists visit annually. Throughout its history, the venue has undergone several name changes and renovations to keep pace with technological advancements. Originally Grauman's Chinese Theatre, it became Mann's Chinese Theatre in 1973 before TCL purchased the naming rights in 2013. That same year, the interior was meticulously restored and converted into one of the largest IMAX theaters in the world, blending historic grandeur with cutting-edge projection technology. It has hosted countless world premieres and served as the venue for the Academy Awards ceremonies from 1944 to 1946, solidifying its status as a living monument to the motion picture industry.
