The Getty Center

The Getty Center is the result of a massive vision by the J. Paul Getty Trust to create a cultural campus that would serve as a global hub for the arts. Designed by renowned architect Richard Meier, the project began in 1984 and took over a decade to complete, finally opening its doors to the public in December 1997. The complex was built on a 110-acre site in the Santa Monica Mountains, chosen for its commanding views of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean. The architecture is a masterpiece of modernism, primarily constructed from 1.2 million square feet of Italian travertine stone. This specific stone was chosen for its durability and its ability to catch the shifting California light, giving the buildings a warm, luminous glow. The campus is designed to integrate seamlessly with the natural landscape, featuring a series of pavilions, courtyards, and the famous Central Garden designed by artist Robert Irwin. Beyond its stunning exterior, the Getty Center houses one of the world's most impressive collections of pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, and decorative arts. It also serves as the headquarters for the Getty Research Institute and the Getty Conservation Institute. Today, it stands as a testament to J. Paul Getty's legacy, offering free access to world-class art and culture to millions of visitors every year.
