Bosco Verticale
Historical Significance
Conceptualized by Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca, and Giovanni La Varra, the project was part of the Porta Nuova district regeneration in Milan. Completed in 2014, it represents a new model of metropolitan reforestation that contributes to the regeneration of the environment and urban biodiversity without expanding the city footprint. It is a pioneering example of how high-density residential development can integrate nature. The two towers, standing at 111 and 76 meters respectively, are home to more than 900 trees, 11,000 groundcover plants, and 5,000 shrubs. This massive amount of greenery is equivalent to two hectares of forest distributed vertically. The selection of plants was a meticulous process that took over two years, involving botanists to ensure each species could withstand the specific wind and light conditions at various heights. Since its completion, Bosco Verticale has become a global icon of sustainable architecture. It has won numerous prestigious awards, including the International Highrise Award in 2014 and the title of Best Tall Building Worldwide in 2015. It serves as a living laboratory for urban ecology, proving that nature and high-density living can coexist while providing a habitat for birds and insects in the heart of the city.
