Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano)

Construction of the Milan Cathedral began in 1386 under the visionary leadership of Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo and the patronage of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the first Duke of Milan. The project was intended as a monumental symbol of the city's prestige and a devotional offering. Unlike the traditional brick Gothic style of Italy, the Duomo was built using Candoglia marble, requiring a complex network of canals to transport the heavy stone from quarries near Lake Maggiore directly to the construction site. For centuries, the 'Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo' managed the continuous labor of thousands of artists and craftsmen.Over the next five hundred years, the cathedral's design evolved through the contributions of numerous architects, including Leonardo da Vinci, who consulted on the structural integrity of the tiburio. The building reflects a unique 'International Gothic' style, blending French and German influences with Italian sensibilities. It was Napoleon Bonaparte who finally pushed for the completion of the facade in the early 19th century, as he wished to be crowned King of Italy within its walls.
