Jehangir Art Gallery

Established in 1952, the Jehangir Art Gallery was founded by Sir Cowasji Jehangir, 2nd Baronet, at the urging of K.K. Hebbar and Homi Bhabha. Built as a memorial to Sir Cowasji's late son, Jehangir, the gallery was designed by G.M. Bhuta and has since become a cornerstone of the Indian contemporary art movement. Its inauguration marked a pivotal moment in Mumbai's cultural history, providing a dedicated space for artists to converge and display their creativity. Over the decades, the gallery has played a crucial role in democratizing art in India. Unlike private galleries, Jehangir has maintained a policy of being accessible to both established masters and emerging talents, fostering a diverse artistic ecosystem. It has hosted legends like M.F. Husain and S.H. Raza, serving as a platform where the public can engage directly with the evolution of Indian modernism without any entry fees. The architecture of the gallery itself is a significant landmark within the Kala Ghoda Arts District. Featuring a distinctive mid-century modern design with a large cantilevered entrance, it houses four main exhibition halls including the Auditorium Hall and the Hirji Jehangir Gallery. Today, it remains the most prestigious venue for artists in the country, with a legendary waiting list that highlights its enduring relevance in the global art world.
