It was designed as a massive open-air laundry where hereditary washermen, known as dhobis, could operate in a centralized, efficient manner. This unique infrastructure allowed the city to manage its sanitation and textile needs during a period of rapid industrial growth. Over the decades, the site expanded into the world's largest outdoor laundry, becoming an iconic fixture of Mumbai's urban landscape. It consists of hundreds of concrete wash pens, each equipped with its own flogging stone where clothes are beaten to remove dirt. Despite the rise of modern industrial washing machines, the traditional methods practiced here have persisted, showcasing a remarkable continuity of labor and culture that has survived for over a century. Today, Dhobi Ghat is recognized as a symbol of Mumbai's incredible human spirit and organizational complexity. Thousands of workers process huge quantities of linen from hotels, hospitals, and garment exporters every single day. In 2011, it earned a Guinness World Record for the most people hand-washing clothes at once, cementing its status as a global landmark and a testament to the city's informal economy.
