Marine Drive

Marine Drive, officially known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road, is a 3.6-kilometer-long promenade in South Mumbai, constructed during the 1920s and 1930s as part of the ambitious Back Bay Reclamation project. This curved beachfront was designed to connect Nariman Point to Babulnath and Malabar Hill, serving as a vital artery for the growing metropolis. Its construction transformed the coastline, turning a rugged shore into one of the most iconic urban landscapes in India. The promenade is lined with a spectacular collection of Art Deco buildings, which were mostly constructed by wealthy Parsis and merchants between 1930 and 1950. This architectural ensemble is so significant that it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the Victorian Gothic buildings of the city. These structures, with their nautical themes and streamlined curves, reflect the modern aspirations of Mumbai during the early 20th century. Beyond its architectural and historical value, Marine Drive has become the social heart of Mumbai. Known affectionately as the 'Queen's Necklace' because of the way the streetlights resemble a string of pearls when viewed from an elevation at night, it serves as a communal space where people from all walks of life gather. Whether it is for a morning jog, a quiet evening watching the sunset, or celebrating major festivals, the promenade remains an enduring symbol of the city's vibrant spirit.
