Hauz Khas Village

The origins of Hauz Khas Village trace back to the 13th century during the reign of Alauddin Khalji of the Delhi Sultanate. Originally named Hauz-i-Alai, it was constructed as a massive reservoir to supply water to the newly built Siri Fort. The tank was a marvel of medieval engineering, designed to collect rainwater and sustain the local population through the scorching summer months. In the 14th century, Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq discovered the tank filled with silt and undertook a massive restoration project. He did not just clear the water; he transformed the site into a premier educational hub by building a Madrasa, a mosque, and his own magnificent tomb overlooking the water. This complex became one of the most important centers of Islamic learning in the world at that time, attracting scholars from across the region. By the late 20th century, the area underwent another dramatic transformation. In the 1980s, fashion designers and restaurateurs began moving into the village, drawn by its unique blend of ancient ruins and rustic charm. Today, Hauz Khas Village is a bustling urban enclave known for its vibrant nightlife, upscale boutiques, and art galleries, all set against the backdrop of the serene Tughlaq-era monuments.
