Munch Museum

The Munch Museum, or Munchmuseet, stands as a monumental tribute to Edvard Munch, one of the most influential figures in modern art. The museum's origins trace back to 1944, when Munch bequeathed his vast collection of artworks, sketches, and personal papers to the City of Oslo upon his death. This extraordinary gift included over 1,100 paintings and thousands of prints and drawings, providing a comprehensive look into his creative process and emotional depth. The first dedicated museum opened in the Tøyen district in 1963, commemorating what would have been the artist's 100th birthday. As Munch’s international reputation grew, the original Tøyen facility became increasingly inadequate for the expanding collection and the influx of global visitors. In 2008, the Oslo City Council initiated plans for a new, state-of-the-art facility on the city's waterfront in Bjørvika. Following an international design competition, Spanish architect Juan Herreros was selected for his bold, vertical design concept. The project aimed to create a modern cultural hub that would not only house art but also serve as a landmark for Oslo's urban renewal project. The new Munch Museum officially opened its doors in October 2021, featuring a striking 13-story tower with a distinctive leaning top. This architectural marvel is one of the world's largest museums dedicated to a single artist, offering five times more exhibition space than its predecessor. Beyond the iconic 'Scream,' the museum showcases Munch's diverse explorations of human existence, anxiety, and love. Its location in the vibrant Bjørvika district cements its role as a cornerstone of Norway's cultural landscape, attracting art lovers from every corner of the globe.
