Municipal House

The Municipal House, or Obecní dům, stands as a premier example of Prague's Art Nouveau architecture, constructed between 1905 and 1912. It was built on the site of the former Royal Court, the residence of Bohemian kings from 1383 to 1485, which had fallen into ruin. Architects Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka were commissioned to create a multifunctional building that would serve as a cultural and social center for the Czech people, reflecting their growing national identity and artistic prowess at the turn of the century. The interior and exterior were adorned by the most prominent Czech artists of the time, creating a total work of art that celebrated Czech culture and history. In 1918, the Municipal House became the stage for one of the most significant events in the nation's history: the proclamation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia. The Smetana Hall, the building's central concert space, hosted the historic meeting where the Czech National Committee declared independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This political significance, combined with its architectural beauty, cemented the building's status as a symbol of national pride. Over the decades, it has hosted countless concerts, balls, and exhibitions, maintaining its role as the heart of Prague's social life. Today, the Municipal House remains a vibrant cultural hub, meticulously restored in the late 1990s to its original 1912 splendor. Visitors can explore its lavishly decorated rooms, including the Lord Mayor's Hall featuring murals by Alfons Mucha, or enjoy a meal in the French restaurant or the traditional Czech beer cellar.
