Old Town Square

Established in the 10th century, Old Town Square began its life as a bustling marketplace at the intersection of European trade routes. Over the centuries, it transformed from a simple trading hub into the political and social heart of Prague. The square has witnessed the coronation of kings, the rise of religious movements like the Hussites, and the construction of monumental landmarks such as the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn and the Baroque St. Nicholas Church, creating a unique architectural timeline that spans a millennium. Throughout the 17th and 20th centuries, the square served as a stage for some of the most dramatic events in Czech history. In 1621, it was the site of the execution of 27 Bohemian leaders following the Battle of White Mountain, an event marked today by white crosses in the pavement. In more recent times, it saw the declaration of independence of Czechoslovakia in 1918 and the tragic destruction of the Old Town Hall's eastern wing during the Prague Uprising in 1945. Today, the square remains a vibrant center of culture and tourism. It hosts the world-famous Prague Astronomical Clock, which has been operating since 1410, and serves as the primary location for the city's legendary Christmas and Easter markets. Despite the scars of war and political upheaval, the square has been meticulously preserved, earning its place as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of the enduring spirit of the Czech people.
