Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading

Founded in 1837 by a group of forty-three Portuguese immigrants, the Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading was established to promote Portuguese culture and literature within the newly independent Brazil. At a time when the Portuguese community in Rio de Janeiro was growing, this institution served as a vital cultural link to their homeland. The founders envisioned a space that would provide education and prestige, eventually leading to the construction of the magnificent building that stands today. The current structure, an architectural masterpiece in the Neo-Manueline style, was built between 1880 and 1887 under the direction of architect Rafael da Silva e Castro. This style, which pays homage to the 16th-century Portuguese Gothic-Renaissance era, features intricate stone carvings and motifs inspired by the Age of Discovery. The building's facade was crafted from Lisbon limestone and transported across the Atlantic, symbolizing the enduring connection between Portugal and Brazil. Formally inaugurated by Princess Isabel in 1887, the library has since become home to the largest collection of Portuguese literature outside of Portugal itself. Its interior is a spectacle of dark wood shelving, stained glass, and a massive wrought-iron chandelier, housing over 350,000 volumes. Today, it is recognized globally not only for its historical significance but also as one of the most visually stunning libraries in the world, attracting scholars and tourists alike.
