After the Korean War, the neighborhood's character was fundamentally reshaped by its proximity to the Yongsan Garrison, the headquarters of the United States Forces Korea. For decades, the area primarily catered to American servicemen, leading to an explosion of Western-style bars, tailor shops, and restaurants. This military presence created a unique cultural enclave where English was as common as Korean, fostering a multicultural atmosphere that was rare in the rest of the country during the late 20th century.
