Fort Canning Park

Fort Canning Hill, originally known as Bukit Larangan or 'Forbidden Hill', holds a sacred place in Singapore's early history as the seat of the 14th-century Malay Kingdom. Archaeological excavations have unearthed Javanese gold jewelry and Chinese porcelain, confirming its status as a residence for royalty long before the British arrived. Local folklore suggested that the spirits of ancient kings guarded the hill, making it a place of mystery and reverence for the indigenous population. Following the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, the hill was transformed into a colonial administrative center. Raffles built his first residence here and established the island's first botanical garden. By 1859, the site was converted into a military fort to protect the harbor from sea attacks, named after Viscount Charles Canning, the first Viceroy of India. The iconic Gothic-style gates and the heavy artillery remnants still visible today date back to this defensive era. During World War II, the hill played a pivotal role as the headquarters of the Far East Command. Deep beneath the surface lies the Battle Box, an underground bunker where the British made the fateful decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese in 1942. Today, the park serves as a lush green lung for the city, hosting world-class concerts and festivals while preserving its multifaceted heritage as a silent witness to Singapore's evolution.
