Night Safari

The Night Safari was conceptualized in the 1980s by Dr. Ong Swee Law, the former executive chairman of the Singapore Zoological Gardens. His vision was to create a space where visitors could observe the natural behaviors of nocturnal animals in a setting that mimicked their native habitats without the harsh disruption of artificial daylight. This pioneering project aimed to blend conservation, research, and education into a singular, immersive after-dark experience. Opened to the public on May 26, 1994, the Night Safari became the world's first nocturnal zoo. Spanning 35 hectares of secondary rainforest, the construction cost approximately S$63 million and utilized innovative lighting techniques designed by lighting expert Simon Corder. These lights were carefully calibrated to simulate the soft glow of moonlight, ensuring that animals remained active while providing enough visibility for guests to navigate the park. Since its inception, the landmark has evolved into a premier global attraction and a vital center for wildlife conservation. It houses over 900 animals representing approximately 100 species, many of which are threatened. The park is renowned for its successful breeding programs for endangered species such as the Malayan tapir and the Asian elephant, and it continues to be a cornerstone of Singapore's tourism and environmental education efforts.
