Sentosa Island

Sentosa Island, originally known as Pulau Blakang Mati, which translates to 'The Island of Death from Behind' in Malay, has a storied past that predates its modern reputation as a resort paradise. In the 19th century, the island served as a crucial defensive outpost for the British Empire, guarding the southern entrance to the Keppel Harbour. Strategic fortifications like Fort Siloso were constructed in the 1880s to protect Singapore from sea-based invasions, marking the island's primary identity as a military stronghold for nearly a century. During the dark years of World War II, the island fell to Japanese forces in 1942 and was utilized as a prisoner-of-war camp, witnessing some of the most somber moments in Singapore's history. Following the war and the eventual withdrawal of British forces, the newly independent Singaporean government sought to repurpose the land. In 1970, a vision was cast to turn the former military base into a premier leisure destination. The island was officially renamed 'Sentosa,' meaning 'Peace and Tranquility' in Malay, in 1972, signaling a new era of tourism and recreation. Over the following decades, massive land reclamation projects and infrastructure investments transformed the rugged terrain into a world-class hub. Today, Sentosa is an integrated resort island featuring luxury hotels, pristine beaches, and major attractions like Universal Studios Singapore and the S.E.A. Aquarium. It stands as a testament to Singapore's ability to reinvent its landscape, evolving from a site of colonial defense and wartime struggle into a globally recognized 'State of Fun.'
