Signal Hill National Historic Site

Signal Hill is most famous as the site of the final battle of the Seven Years' War in North America, fought in 1762. The British victory here secured their control over Newfoundland and marked a turning point in the conflict with France. For centuries, its commanding position overlooking the entrance to St. John's Harbour made it the primary defensive fortification for the city, with various batteries and barracks constructed to guard against naval invasions. In 1897, construction began on Cabot Tower to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's voyage to the New World and Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. However, the site's most groundbreaking moment occurred on December 12, 1901, when Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal—the letter 'S' in Morse code—sent from Poldhu, Cornwall. This achievement revolutionized global communication and cemented Signal Hill's place in scientific history. Throughout the 20th century, the hill continued to serve military purposes, particularly during World War II when it was equipped with anti-aircraft batteries and coastal defense guns. Today, Signal Hill is managed by Parks Canada as a National Historic Site. It serves as a symbol of the province's resilient spirit, offering visitors a blend of military heritage, communication history, and breathtaking natural beauty along the rugged coastline of the Atlantic Ocean.
