Djurgården

Djurgården's history dates back to the 15th century when it was acquired by the Swedish Crown. In 1579, King John III transformed the island into a royal deer park for hunting, which is how it earned its name, meaning 'Animal Garden.' For centuries, it remained a restricted area for royalty, but by the 18th century, it began to open up to the public as a popular destination for recreation and entertainment, with inns and theaters appearing along its shores. The 19th century marked a pivotal era for Djurgården as it evolved into a cultural hub. In 1891, Artur Hazelius founded Skansen, the world's first open-air museum, to preserve Swedish folk culture amidst rapid industrialization. This was followed by the construction of the massive Nordic Museum and several international exhibitions that showcased Swedish innovation and design, firmly establishing the island as the nation's premier site for history and education. Today, Djurgården is a cherished part of the Royal National City Park, the first of its kind in the world. It serves as Stockholm's green lung, offering a unique blend of lush woodlands, historic buildings, and world-class museums like the Vasa Museum and ABBA The Museum. While it remains under the administration of the Royal Court, it is a vibrant public space that attracts millions of visitors annually, balancing its royal heritage with modern leisure.
