Gröna Lund
Historical Significance
Founded in 1883 by James Schultheiss, Gröna Lund is Sweden's oldest amusement park. It occupies a relatively small area on the seaward side of Djurgården island, which has forced the park to become incredibly creative with its architecture and ride placement. Its early years were defined by a charming, traditional atmosphere that quickly made it a favorite destination for Stockholmers looking for escape and entertainment by the water. For decades, the park faced fierce competition from a rival amusement park, Nöjesfältet, located directly across the street. This rivalry became legendary in Swedish folklore because the children of the two competing families eventually fell in love, a story that mirrors Romeo and Juliet and was recently immortalized in the film 'Swoon'. When Nöjesfältet closed in 1957, Gröna Lund became the undisputed heart of amusement in the city, carrying forward the legacy of both sites. Beyond the adrenaline of the rides, Gröna Lund is world-renowned as a premier music venue. The park's main stage has hosted some of the greatest names in music history, including a record-breaking performance by Bob Marley in 1980 that drew over 30,000 fans. Today, it remains a vibrant cultural landmark where historic charm meets modern thrills, all set against the picturesque backdrop of Stockholm's inner harbor.
Did you know?
"Because the park is built on a very small and constrained plot of land, many of its rollercoasters and buildings are built on top of or through one another, creating a unique 'nested' architecture seen in few other parks worldwide."
