Millesgården

Millesgården was originally the private home and studio of the renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles and his wife, the artist Olga Milles. In 1906, the couple purchased a plot of land on the Herserud cliff on the island of Lidingö, overlooking the Värtan strait. Over the next two decades, they transformed the rugged terrain into a breathtaking Mediterranean-inspired oasis, blending classical architecture with the natural beauty of the Swedish archipelago. The site served as their creative sanctuary where Carl designed some of his most famous monumental fountains and sculptures. In 1936, Carl and Olga Milles decided to donate their beloved home and its extensive art collections to the Swedish people, establishing the Millesgården Foundation. Since then, the site has expanded to include a modern art gallery, which hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary and classical art, and 'Annes Hus,' the former home of the museum's first director. The museum remains a testament to the couple's vision of a 'gesamtkunstwerk,' or a total work of art, where sculpture, architecture, and nature exist in perfect harmony. Today, visitors from around the world come to experience the unique atmosphere of the sculpture park, where bronze figures appear to defy gravity against the backdrop of the sea and sky. The museum meticulously maintains the original interiors of the Milles' home, providing a glimpse into the lifestyle and aesthetic preferences of one of Sweden's most influential artistic couples.
