Moderna Museet

Moderna Museet first opened its doors in 1958, housed within a former naval drill hall on the tranquil island of Skeppsholmen. The institution was established to separate modern and contemporary works from the traditional collection of the Nationalmuseum, signaling Sweden's commitment to the avant-garde. Its early years were marked by a vibrant atmosphere of experimentation, quickly establishing it as a leading European center for 20th-century art. In the late 1990s, the museum underwent a significant transformation with the construction of a new, purpose-built facility designed by the renowned Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. This sleek, modern structure was inaugurated in 1998 but faced a major setback just years later when mold issues forced a temporary closure. After an extensive two-year renovation, the museum reopened in 2004, featuring improved climate control and revitalized gallery spaces that better serve its prestigious permanent collection. Throughout its history, Moderna Museet has curated a world-class collection featuring giants like Picasso, Matisse, and Duchamp, alongside a strong representation of Nordic artists. It has also been the setting of dramatic events, including a notorious 1993 'Mission Impossible' style heist where thieves entered through the roof. Today, it remains a cornerstone of Stockholm's cultural landscape, bridging the gap between historical modernism and the provocative contemporary art of the 21st century.
