Storkyrkan

Storkyrkan, officially known as Sankt Nikolai kyrka, is the oldest church in Stockholm's Old Town, Gamla Stan. Its origins date back to at least 1279, when it was first mentioned in written records as a small village church founded by Birger Jarl, the founder of Stockholm itself. Over the centuries, it grew in significance alongside the city, evolving from a simple brick structure into a grand cathedral that has served as the spiritual heart of the Swedish capital for over seven hundred years. During the 16th century, the church became a focal point for the Swedish Reformation. It was here that Olaus Petri, the prominent reformer, preached and introduced the first Swedish-language liturgy. The church has a long-standing relationship with the Swedish Monarchy, serving as the traditional site for coronations until the late 19th century and continuing to host royal weddings and funerals to this day, including the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria in 2010. Architecturally, the building is a fascinating blend of styles. While the interior retains much of its original Brick Gothic character, the exterior was extensively remodeled in the 18th century to a Baroque style. This change was commissioned to ensure the cathedral harmonized with the newly built Royal Palace located right next door. Inside, visitors are greeted by masterpieces such as the 15th-century wooden sculpture of Saint George and the Dragon, symbolizing the Swedish victory over Danish forces.
