St Mary's Cathedral

The foundation stone of the first St Mary's Cathedral was laid in 1821 by Governor Macquarie, but this original structure was tragically destroyed by a massive fire in 1865. The loss devastated the local Catholic community, yet it paved the way for a more ambitious project led by Archbishop Polding. He commissioned the renowned architect William Wardell to design a grand cathedral in the Gothic Revival style, envisioning a structure that would rival the great cathedrals of Europe. Construction of the current building began in 1868, utilizing local Sydney sandstone which gives the cathedral its warm, golden hue. Because of its immense scale and the financial challenges of the time, the building was completed in stages over many decades. The iconic twin spires, which were part of Wardell's original design, were not actually added until the year 2000, finally completing the silhouette that dominates the Sydney skyline today. Beyond its architectural grandeur, St Mary's Cathedral stands as a profound symbol of the resilience and faith of the Australian people. It has hosted countless significant events, from royal visits to solemn state funerals, and remains the spiritual home of the Catholic community in Australia. The interior is equally impressive, featuring a stunning crypt with a detailed mosaic floor that depicts the creation, making it a masterpiece of both faith and artistry.
