St. Lawrence Market

Established in 1803, St. Lawrence Market began as a central gathering point for the town of York, which later became Toronto. Lieutenant Governor Peter Hunter issued a proclamation designating the land for a public market to serve the growing colonial population. This original market was a simple wooden structure that quickly became the center of commerce and social interaction for early settlers. In 1845, a permanent brick building was constructed to serve as the South Market, which also housed Toronto's City Hall until 1899. Following a major fire and the city's expansion, the building underwent a significant transformation at the turn of the century. The current South Market structure, completed in 1902, famously integrated the 1845 City Hall's council chamber into its massive brick architecture. Throughout the 20th century, the market faced various challenges, including the rise of supermarkets and urban redevelopment plans. However, it persevered as a bastion of local food culture and historic preservation. In 2012, National Geographic recognized its global significance by naming it the world's best food market, cementing its status as a must-visit destination for both locals and international travelers.
