Christ the Redeemer
Historical Significance
Christ the Redeemer is a massive Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ located at the summit of Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Conceived as a symbol of peace and religious devotion following World War I, it was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by French artist Paul Landowski. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1931 using reinforced concrete covered in thousands of triangular soapstone tiles. Standing 30 meters tall on an 8-meter pedestal, it remains one of the world's most recognizable cultural icons and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
