Spanish Riding School

The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is the only institution in the world which has practiced for over 450 years and continues to cultivate classical equitation in the Renaissance tradition of the Haute Ecole. Its name derives from the Spanish horses that formed one of the bases of the Lipizzaner breed, which is used exclusively at the school. Originally established in 1572, it served as a training ground for the nobility and their mounts within the imperial court of the Habsburgs. The Winter Riding School, the magnificent white hall where performances are held today, was commissioned by Emperor Charles VI and completed in 1735. Designed by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, this architectural masterpiece was intended to provide a regal setting for the aristocrats to demonstrate their riding skills. Throughout the centuries, the school survived numerous political upheavals and wars, maintaining its strict adherence to classical training methods passed down orally from one generation of riders to the next. A pivotal moment in its modern history occurred at the end of World War II when General George S. Patton of the U.S. Army assisted in the rescue of the Lipizzaner stallions from advancing Soviet forces. This act ensured the survival of the breed and the school's traditions. In 2015, the classical horsemanship of the Spanish Riding School was admitted to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, cementing its status as a global treasure of living history.
